Tyrrell Hatton won the Turkish Airlines Open after edging a six-man play-off at The Montgomerie Maxx Royal on Sunday. The 28-year-old Englishman was three shots off leader Matthias Schwab going into the final round, but his five-under-par 67 was enough to see him finish on 20-under for the tournament. Austrian Schwab could only manage a 70 to tie with Hatton, while American Kurt Kitayama, French duo Benjamin Hebert and Victor Perez and South Africa’s Erik van Rooyen joined them at the top of the leaderboard. In what was the European Tour’s first six-man play-off since 2003, Perez, Hebert and Van Rooyen were eliminated at the first extra hole. Kitayama went out on the third hole when he could only manage a par, before Hatton prevailed on the fourth extra hole as he parred while Schwab hit a bogey. Speaking after winning his fourth European Tour title and first since winning the Italian Open in October 2017, Hatton told Sky Sports: “I can’t believe I’ve won. “It’s been quite a difficult year with some things off the course but I really found my game in the last month. “It’s easy to take things for granted in sport but it hits home when it’s not going well. “I said I would really savour it if I won again and I will. I’m absolutely thrilled.”
