West Ham United are understood to be on the trail of Crawley Town star Panutche Camara and saw him at his devastating best on Saturday against Scunthorpe. Camara ripped fellow League Two club Scunthorpe United apart as Crawley won their FA Cup first-round tie 4-1 at The People’s Pension Stadium to ensure they are in the hat for the second round draw on Monday night.
The ex-Barnsley trainee set up two of his side’s goals and was said to be a constant menace to the visiting defence with his pace and effervescence.
The 22-year-old striker’s performances of late have caught the eye of a number of Championship and Premier League clubs – and it would seem the Hammers have also taken notice.
Over the summer it was reported that one Championship club were interested in making a joint-bid for three Crawley players, with Camara included, but he stayed on at the Sussex club.
He signed a new one-year deal with the Reds and, with a matter of six months left on it in January, Crawley could be tempted to cash in on the interest.
They snatched him from non-league outfit Dulwich Hamlet in 2017 and have seen him develop into a decent prospect.
Camara, however, is not a prolific striker and has only scored five League Two goals in 90 appearances for the club.
He has provided five assists in 15 games this season, though, and was devastating against Scunthorpe on Saturday.
Making a three-step jump to the Premier League looks too tall an order and, if they signed him, West Ham would probably put him in their development squad or loan him out.
But several players have shown it is possible to bridge the gap from the lower leagues to the Championship with success – such as Charlton Athletic striker Macauley Bonne and Millwall midfielder Jed Wallace.
