Solskjaer: Cavani asked to be a substitute against Burnley

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that Edinson Cavani asked to be a substitute against Burnley.

Cavani was named on the bench for the game at Old Trafford, with the striker having struggled with various injuries this season.

Solskjaer stressed the importance of managing the 34-year-old’s fitness carefully.

As reported by Manchester Evening News, Solskjaer said: ‘We’ve got to manage him well. He’s not played or started three games in a week for a long time, so when I spoke to him he felt being a sub was the best thing. With Marcus, it’s a long time since I’ve asked him how you are and he’s said good.’

Cavani played for an hour after starting for United against Granada on Thursday and was on the scoresheet, and prior to that completed 90 minutes against Tottenham last weekend.

This season Cavani has scored nine goals in 30 appearances for United, who have an option to extend his contract by a year when his deal expires this summer.

With United having progressed to the semi-finals of the Europa League, Solskjaer’s side still have much to look forward to in the closing stages of the season.

United’s Premier League game at home to Liverpool comes in between the two Europa League games against Roma, with further rotation likely.
