Pogba criticised by ex-Man Utd star despite stellar Euro 2020 display

Paul Pogba has enjoyed a stunning start to Euro 2020, helping to guide France into the knockout stages of the tournament as group winners.

While Les Bleus as a team have failed to truly hit their best thus far, drawing two of their three group games, Pogba has been in inspired form, most notably against bigger opposition in the form of Germany and Portugal.

The more recent clash with Portugal saw Pogba notch a stunning assist, his perfectly weighted pinpoint through-ball bending round Ruben Dias and into the path of teammate Karim Benzema.

However, it was his display against Germany on France’s opening night that got plenty of fans and pundits alike talking.

Dominating the contest from the middle of the park with a perfect mix of athleticism and technical prowess, Pogba had the beating of the likes of Toni Kroos and Ilkay Gundogan with a number of deft flicks and tricks.

Unfortunately for the Old Trafford star, he is yet to win over every member of the French faithful.

Ex-Manchester United defender and fellow Frenchman Mikael Silvestre remains unconvinced over Pogba’s consistency despite dubbing him a “world-class player”.

Speaking to Ladbrokes, Silvestre explained: “The problem with Paul Pogba is the consistency – or lack of.

“When he’s at the top of this game, his level is something else, but he finds it difficult to repeat that game after game.

“I look at it this way; he’s a world-class player, he’s got world-class attributes for sure. The question is, can he repeat it every three days? I’m not sure he can.

“He hasn’t done it for Man United, I’m not sure he can do it for France either.”

Despite plenty of people heaping praise on Pogba’s recent showings, Silvestre continued: “I’m always happy to see him on the pitch for club or country, because he’s been unlucky with injuries.

“The frustrating part is that we haven’t seen him reach his levels week-in, week-out.

“I don’t know whether it’s a psychological thing or a physical thing. I’m a Man United supporter and a France supporter, so I’m always hoping that whoever he represents, we see the best of him, because we saw against Germany just how much he can give to the team.”

Pogba has often had to face accusations he saves his best form for when he pulls on a France shirt, but he ended his club season strong and will be integral to Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s plans if the Red Devils are aiming to better their second-placed finish from last campaign.
