‘Eguavoen Good Replacement For Rohr’ —Esin

Former Nigeria international Etim Esin has described Austin Eguavoen as a good replacement for Gernot Rohr.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in a statement on their Facebook page, announced Eguavoen who is currently Technical Director, as the Technical Adviser of the Eagles on an interim basis, thereby ending Rohr’s five-year reign.

Following a virtual meeting of the NFF Executive Committee on Sunday, it was decided that Eguavoen will work with Salisu Yusuf (Chief Coach); Paul Aigbogun (Assistant Coach); Joseph Yobo (Assistant Coach); Dr Terry Eguaoje (Assistant Coach) and Aloysius Agu (Goalkeeper Trainer).

Eguavoen’s former teammates Austin Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu and Garba Lawal were appointed to provide technical and ambassadorial support for the crew.

He will now take charge of the team as it begins preparations for the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon until the appointment of a substantive Head Coach.

And in an exclusive chat with Completesports.com, Esin posited that Eguavoen’s previous spell with the Eagles will be to his advantage.

“Austin has been there before so it’s nothing wrong so let’s see what will happen. Nigerians were not happy imagine the Super Eagles surrendering a 4-0 lead against Sierra Leone, losing to Central African Republic and drawing Cape Verde at home.

“If we play well and lose or draw it’s a different thing but the standard now is not it and it’s evident Rohr would have to go.

“We should thank Rohr for what he has done for us but let’s give our local coaches a chance. Other African countries are handled by their ex-internationals, teams like Algeria and Senegal and others. If Eguavoen comes in and do the magic so be it, all we want is good result.

Eguavoen led the Eagles to a third-placed finish at the 2006 AFCON in Egypt.
