After an impressive win over Egypt in their AFCON Group B opener, the Super Eagles will be back in action on Saturday against Sudan at the Roumde Adjia Stadium, Garoua.
This will be the third meeting between Nigeria and Sudan at the Africa Cup of Nations finals. And they are at par, with each side winning a match from their two past encounters. This is bound to flatter the Sudanese team going into this clash against three-time champions, Nigeria.
And ahead of the Group D matchday-2 fixture , Completesports.com’s JAMES AGBEREBI takes a look at the outcome of their previous two encounters at AFCON tournament.
SUDAN 4 – 0 NIGERIA (AFCON 1963)
Nigeria and Sudan’s first ever meeting at the Africa Cup of Nations was at the fourth edition in 1963 hosted by Ghana.
It was Nigeria’s first appearance at the tournament and they faced the Sudanese in their second group game after their opener against Egypt which ended 6-3 in favour of the North Africans.
Going into the game against Sudan, Nigeria needed an outright win to stand a chance of making it to the bronze medal match.
But it was not to be as the Sudanese thrashed Nigeria 4-0 to hand them their second defeat of the tournament.
Following the heavy win against Nigeria, Sudan beat Egypt to the top spot in Group B and qualified for the final where they faced hosts Ghana.
And in the final the Sudanese were hammered 3-0 by Ghana while Egypt beat Ethiopia in the third-placed match.
NIGERIA 1- 0 SUDAN (AFCON 1976)
The second meeting between Nigeria and Sudan at the Africa Cup of Nations was in 1976 which was staged in Ethiopia.
Both countries were drawn in Group B in the First Round of the eight-team tournament.
Nigeria’s first game was against Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo) which they won 4-2.
The Nigerian team met Sudan in their second group game and avenged the 4-0 loss in 1963 as they won 1-0 thanks to Godwin Usiyen’s goal.
While Nigeria and Group B winners Morocco qualified for the final round of the tournament, Sudan and Zaire crashed out.
After the conclusion of the final round games, Morocco finished top and won their first and only AFCON title.
Guinea were second, Nigeria claimed the bronze medal and Egypt finished bottom of the four-team Final Round fixtures.
