Fernandes Breaks Beckham’s Champions League Record

Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes broke a 24-year-old record held by England legend David Beckham, after helping Manchester United hold Atletico Madrid to a 1-1 draw in their Champions League first leg round of 16 fixture.

Atletico took an early first half lead thanks to Joao Felix who nodded in a cross from the left by Lenan Lodi.

But with 10 minutes left United equalized after Fernandes set up substitute Anthony Elanga who slotted past Jan Oblak.

And following Elanga’s goal, Fernandes became the first player in Champions League history to assist in six consecutive appearances while playing for an English club, breaking the record held by Beckham (for Man United) since 1998.

Fernandes has now taken his assist tally to 14 in 34 games in all competitions for United this season.

The 27-year-old joined United from Sporting Lisbon on January 2020 for a fee reportedly worth up to €80 million £67.6 million.
