Scholes Wants Manchester United To Miss Out On Champions League Qualification

Legendary Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has told his former club to settle for eighth in the Premier League and give potential new manager Erik ten Hag the time to rebuild – despite being sixth in the league table.

United suffered another major blow in their push to finish in the Premier League’s top four with a heavy 4-0 defeat to leaders Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday.

The defeats means United now in sixth on the log with just five matches left this campaign – with both fourth and fifth place Tottenham and Arsenal having games in hand.

West Ham and Wolves are chasing behind in seventh and eighth as they head into the final stretch of the campaign – two and five points behind respectively.

His former club now look set to miss out on the Champions League, but remain in the hunt for the Europa League, although either way it seems like the club could be heading for a major summer overhaul.

Ajax manager Erik ten Hag is set to be the first change at Old Trafford, as he edges closer to being appointed as the replacement for interim boss Ralf Rangnick at the end of the season.

Scholes, however, took to Instagram to urge his former side to forget about Europe rather allow ten Hag the time to get United back on track.

He posted to his followers: “Finish 8th and give this man the time he needs… saddened by what’s happening, unrecognisable football club.”

An eighth-place finish could be beneficial to United with no European distractions for ten Hag to encounter as he rebuilds the squad and implements his own philosophy next season.

It would hamper signings of course, but perhaps that would also take United away from signing big names, and actually building a project that could once again move them back to being a title contender in years to come.

It would also allow the United squad to be fresher without the mid-week trips abroad for their Premier League clashes, which could be a massive help if they want to get back into the top four.
