Josh Taylor’s promotional team have confirmed that a world title defense against Jose Zepeda is in the works for the Scotsman’s next fight.
Taylor had to surrender his WBA super-lightweight title over the weekend due to the governing body’s required criteria, but the Scottish star is now poised to defend his WBC, WBO, and IBF belts against Zepeda, WBC mandatory challenger.
“Zepeda is falling off a battle of the year execution against Baranchyk and a first-round KO of Vargas in October,” stated High-level President Todd Duboef.
Jose Zepeda stunned Josue Vargas by knocking him out in the first round in New York.
“These together have procured him the required situation to Josh’s WBC crown.
“We are working with the two groups to put this battle on straightaway.”
Taylor has held the WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO belts in February, when he defeated WBO mandatory challenger Jack Catterall, who had demanded a rematch.
Regardless of the WBA’s decision to maintain a mandatory guard, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman told Sky Sports that Zepeda was next in line to challenge Taylor.

“We ordered that fight,” Sulaiman told Sky Sports. “We have a purse bid date set for the 24th of this month, I suppose.
“The problem is that we had an agreement. The four presidents, Paco Valcarcel, Daryl Peoples, Gilberto Mendoza, and myself, convened in Puerto Rico and reached an agreement.
“We sat down and evaluated the division, and it was clear that [Jack] Catterall was the WBO obligatory right away.” Zepeda as WBC mandatory was next, and then the IBF mandatory was next.
“Weirdly enough, the WBA essentially went out and demanded another fight, and they have now stripped Josh Taylor of his belt, or Josh surrendered.” Whatever the case may be, it is just horrible.
“We need to keep the required brought together heroes. We need to have compulsory competitors that are of the greatest level, however we will see what occurs straightaway.”
