West Ham Seal £30m Nayef Aguerd Transfer In First Summer Deal

West Ham have signed Morocco defender Nayef Aguerd from Rennes on a five-year deal.

David Moyes was keen for a left-footed centre-back this summer and has finally gotten his dream, bringing Moroccan international Aguerd to the London Stadium as his first signing of the window. The 26-year-old, who will wear No. 27, is renowned for his physicality, game reading, and aerial presence, and will likely push Issa Diop down the pecking order and become Kurt Zouma’s long-term defensive partner.

The 26-year-old defender has spent the last four seasons in France, during which time his stock has risen significantly.

A new Premier League challenge awaits, with Aguerd eager to step right into the action at the London Stadium.

What Has West Ham Paid For Nayef Aguerd?

The Hammers have put a lot of money on Aguerd’s current abilities and future potential.

Moyes has persuaded his board that spending £30 million ($37 million) on the highly rated Moroccan is a wise investment. He will wear the number 27 for the Hammers.

Aguerd’s arrival will give significant depth to West Ham’s defensive ranks as the club prepares for a more continental-focused campaign in 2022-23.

Last season’s seventh-place finish ensured Europa Conference League entry, with Moyes stating, “The truth is, I’ve probably been looking forwards six months to a year.”

“How can I grow it a little bit better and stronger. I’ve been at it all the time and I’ve never stopped thinking about the future and growing the club.”

With Aguerd in place, West Ham may now consider bids for Issa Diop, the 25-year-old Frenchman who aroused interest from Manchester United before a slump in form, as he approaches the end of his contract.

Who Is Nayef Aguerd, The Latest West Ham Signing?

Aguerd is a left-footed centre-back who is expected to be the Hammers’ long-term replacement for Angelo Ogbonna.

Last season, he averaged one interception, one tackle, and 4.1 clearances per game in 31 Ligue 1 matches, while also winning 3.1 aerial duels.

He has 25 Moroccan caps and was a constant presence during Morocco’s run to the final eight of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations.

Aguerd also played in both of his country’s World Cup play-off matches against Congo DR, as they qualified for the finals in Qatar.
