Real Madrid beat Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Super Cup in Helsinki to capture their first silverware of the season.
Goals from Karim Benzema and David Alaba were enough to see off the German team who were winners of the Europa League for the 2021/2022 season.
Madrid have now equalled Barcelona and AC Milan’s record, winning the UEFA Super Cup 5 times.
This was their first since the 2017 triumph over Manchester United.
How Intense Was The Game?
At the Helsinki Olympic Stadium, the semi-automated offside system made its debut in a European match between the champions of the previous season’s Champions League and Europa League.
The first half saw numerous occasions when Thibaut Courtois had to make a save, but Real held the majority of the ball and took the lead eight minutes before halftime.
David Alaba poked the ball into an empty net after Casemiro had headed the ball back across goal from a difficult angle.
After the break, Frankfurt continued to make progress but lacked substance in the final third, and the La Liga champions appeared to have the best chance of scoring the game’s second goal.
On the hour mark, Casemiro’s powerful left-footed shot hit the crossbar before Benzema increased Real’s advantage by connecting with a cross from Vinicius Junior and beating Kevin Trapp from just inside the box.
