Van Dijk Issues Warning To Nunez Following Incident

Van Dijk Issues Warning To Nunez Following Incident

Nunez was sent out of the game on Saturday for a headbutt on Palace defender Joachim Andersen.

Darwin Nunez cost Liverpool up to £85 million when he transferred from Benfica.

The Uruguayan let his emotions boil as he rammed his head into Andersen’s face in the 57th minute. The two players had been sparring throughout the game.

Despite Liverpool tying the score four minutes after the incident via a spectacular Luis Diaz goal, the dismissal left the Reds without a center forward and they struggled to find a winner in the remaining 30 minutes.

As a result, Jurgen Klopp’s team now has two draws from their first two games, and at this early stage, there is a four point gap between them and Manchester City, their potential title opponents.

Nunez’s three-game Premier League suspension and the absence of Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota have left the Merseyside club lacking in attacking options.

Van Dijk has reminded Nunez that he must take responsibility for his actions.

The Dutchman stated, “He’s got the backing from us and he knows it should not happen again and hopefully it will be that way,

“He has to control himself, definitely. I think that’s a separate thing.”

“He has to manage himself, he has to be knowing that these things can happen, especially in the Premier League.

“It will be a learning curve for him and hopefully it will never happen again.”

What Did Klopp Say About The Incident?

Coach Jurgen Klopp scolded Nunez for his antics as well.

The German said to Sky Sports: “Look, he knows that himself. I will talk to him. It makes no sense for me to talk about it in public, you see it.

“It’s not the reaction you want to see. Centre-halves in the Premier League do that- they want to have him, he’s a handful himself but that’s a reaction.

“There’s no time, there’s no pre-season. We don’t know how long he will be suspended.”

“We will use it (suspension) for physical work- not as punishment- but making him even stronger and that’s what we’ll try.”

The following weekend, Liverpool will face Manchester United at Old Trafford as they look to recover from this setback.
