Newcastle Rises To Fifth With Impressive Win Over Brentford

Newcastle United moved up to fifth place in the Premier League table after defeating Brentford 5-1 at St James’ Park.

The Magpies have now only lost one of their nine games so far this season, and their third victory of the season has moved them into fifth place, two points behind Chelsea, who defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 on the same afternoon.

Brentford, who are 11th in the league with 10 points, had the ball in the nett in the 10th minute of the game through Bryan Mbuemo, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

Instead, it was Newcastle who broke the deadlock in the 21st minute, with Bruno Guimaraes headed home from a brilliant cross from Kieran Trippier.

The home side then extended their advantage in the 28th minute when Brentford goalkeeper David Raya made a mistake, allowing Callum Wilson to feed Jacob Murphy, who tapped home.

Brentford almost cut the lead in half early in the second half when Ivan Toney found Mbuemo, who sent a low drive towards the bottom corner, but Nick Pope made a superb stop.

However, the Bees eventually score in the 52nd minute, with Toney scoring from the penalty spot after Dan Burn had handled inside the box.

Newcastle added a third two minutes later, with Guimaraes slipping his shot past Raya, with the home side responding immediately against Thomas Frank’s side.

Eddie Howe’s team was not done, though, and made it 4-1 in the 82nd minute when Miguel Almiron capitalised on an error by Ethan Pinnock to blast into an empty net.

There was also time for a fifth goal, with Pinnock’s own goal closing off a wretched afternoon for Brentford, who conceded three goals in a difficult second half.
