Club legend Petr Cech had filled the role of technical director but left after Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over the Blues, buying the Premier League outfit from Roman Abramovich.
Although the former goalkeeper has not yet been replaced, Stewart will assume the position and return to the Premier League, where he previously worked, according to reports.
The Englishman formerly worked in performance analysis at the FA and Manchester City.
Before going to Monaco, he was also head of scouting with RRB Leipzig and the Red Bull network.
Stewart’s experience at Manchester City and Red Bull will have been a huge asset for him in landing the position because the Chelsea owners have been clear about wanting to establish a multi-club model built on Stamford Bridge.
Christopher Vivell, a former technical director for RB Salzburg, had also been rumored to be heading to Stamford Bridge. It’s unclear whether Stewart’s arrival thwarts that or not.

Meanwhile, the Blues are also interested in hiring Southampton’s Joe Shields as director of recruitment.
The Blues are currently fifth in the Premier League after the weekend’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United.
However, they are just outside the top four on goal difference and have a game in hand over Tottenham and Newcastle who are third and fourth.
