Barcelona are reportedly willing to let Memphis Depay leave the club during the January transfer window.
With just one year left on his contract, it was generally believed during the summer that the Netherlands international would join with a new team.
Despite Barcelona’s openness to a free move, the dynamic attacker remained in Catalonia with the intention of obtaining regular playing time ahead of the World Cup.
Instead, the 28-year-old has only made two starts and one replacement appearance in all competitions, with his latest club game coming on September 17.
Shortly after that, Depay had a hamstring injury during the international break, and he has been out since since. This has led to claims that Depay has delayed a recovery in time for the World Cup.
The Dutchman reacted angrily, writing on social media, “Don’t ever disrespect my professionalism.”
While Depay is anticipated to play in the World Cup, he is unlikely to appear for Barcelona before the domestic break, and the playmaker may have already played for the La Liga leaders for the rest of the season.
To Leave Barcelona In January?
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, as reported by CaughtOffside, all parties are “open” for business in January.
Romano emphasises that Depay has little interest in accepting an offer from a team that does not play at the “top” level.
There are also no current offers on the table, which potentially gives Depay a shop window at the World Cup in Qatar.
Last summer, Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus appeared to be the most likely destinations for the midfielder before a deal fell through.
Barcelona’s executives will be open to further cutting their pay cost as a result of their early elimination from the Champions League.

According to a report, Barcelona will already profit financially from Gerard Pique’s unexpected retirement, giving them room to bolster their team in January.
Despite their relegation to the Europa League, Xavi and his team will want to win it, and they have been drawn against Manchester United in the final 32.
