Chelsea’s Reece James Says 2022 Has Been His Toughest Year

Chelsea full-back Reece James has said 2022 has been the “toughest” year of his career after being forced off against Bournemouth last night with another knee injury.

James played in his first competitive game at Stamford Bridge since early October, and he appeared at ease as Chelsea leapt out to a two-goal lead. However, early in the second period, James signified to the bench that he needed to be replaced before collapsing to the ground in agony.

The full extent of the injury has yet to be determined, and Chelsea head coach Graham Potter has stated that it will take 24-48 hours. Nevertheless, James has taken to social media to reflect on what has been the most difficult year of his young and already amazingly successful career.

“2022 has been the toughest year to date,” James wrote on Twitter.

“I just wanted to thank you all for the support this year, none of it has gone unnoticed. “It’s naturally effected me mentally, I’m currently just tryna deal with the cards I’ve been dealt. I hope your end of year is filled with peace, joy and happiness.”

James’ importance to Chelsea has only grown during his absences over the last year.

Graham Potter expressed concern about James’ injury after the win but insisted it would be a waiting game to learn the full prognosis.

He said: “It’s really too soon, but it’s the same area so we are concerned and we’ll have to see over the next 24-48 hours.

“He felt something there and we will have to find out the extent of it and keep our fingers crossed. He’s disappointed, of course he is. At the moment, we are hoping it isn’t as bad.
