Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has lavished praise on his “excellent players” after the Gunners missed out on a move for Mykhailo Mudryk.
Arteta’s side were thought to be leading the race to sign the Shakhtar Donetsk attacker, having held several rounds of talks with the Ukrainian giants.
However, after two bids were rejected and Arsenal failed to meet Shakhtar’s €100m (£88.6m) valuation, Arsenal conceded defeat to Chelsea in the race for Mudryk.
The 22-year-old made his debut for the Blues during their 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday after signing a seven-and-a-half-year deal with the club that runs through 2030.
Despite missing out on signing Mudryk, Arsenal cruised to a 2-0 win over North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur later on Sunday to move eight points clear of Manchester City atop the Premier League table.

When asked about Arsenal’s failure to sign Mudryk, Arteta told Sky Sports: ‘I am very proud to have the players that we have.
‘We always want to try to improve the squad. The club are the first ones to try to do everything they can to improve the players we have.
‘But I think we have to have some discipline and we have to be very consistent in the targets we want, but as well what we are able to do in each moment.
‘We can make the players better, let’s focus on that.’
When asked if Arsenal have enough players, Arteta responded, “We had some injuries, some long-term injuries and this is not helpful but we can focus on tomorrow.”
‘Train better, train better and review the game. The window is open and we will try to improve the team.
