Manchester City Set To Open Contract Talks With Erling Haaland

Manchester City are reportedly preparing to open talks with record-breaking player Erling Haaland over a new contract.

The 22-year-old has shattered records for fun since arriving at the Etihad last summer, and he reached 50 goals for the season in Sunday’s 2-1 Premier League win over Fulham.

Haaland scored his 50th goal from the penalty spot, becoming the first player in English football to do it in 92 years.

The former Borussia Dortmund star has already surpassed the record for most goals in a 38-game Premier League season, with his spot kick at Craven Cottage being his 34th top-flight goal of the season.

Haaland has now equaled Alan Shearer and Andy Cole for the most Premier League goals in a single season of any length during an outstanding year, bringing Man City back to the top of the league at the expense of Arsenal.

Despite signing the Norway international to a five-year contract last summer, Football Insider reports that Man City are already planning to extend Haaland’s contract until 2027.

Haaland is believed to have committed to a £150m release clause when he signed for £52.6m from Dortmund last summer.

According to the report, the Premier League champions plan to tie Haaland down for another two years until the summer of 2029, when he would be 29 years old, and the striker is content in Manchester and prepared to discuss an extension.

It’s unknown whether City will include a release option in Haaland’s new contract, but the Citizens want to make sure that their Premier League rivals can’t poach Haaland in the same way they did in 2022.

Haaland has 50 goals in 44 games in all competitions and eight assists for his teammates, including two assists for Kevin De Bruyne in their 4-1 thrashing of Arsenal last week.
