Real Madrid icon, Raul Gonzalez has become a prime managerial target for Villarreal as they are looking for a suitable candidate to succeed Quique Setien at the helm.
Raul has excelled since taking over as coach of Real Madrid Castilla, the club’s reserve team, in 2019. This summer, he attracted interest from a number of European clubs, including Leeds United, Eintracht Frankfurt, Schalke 04, and Espanyol.
The challenge of taking over as Villarreal boss highly interests the 46-year-old. Although, up until this point, the Spaniard has chosen to stay at the Bernabeu in order to concentrate on Real Madrid’s youth project.
Villarreal sacked Setien on Tuesday after a rocky start to the new LaLiga season.
With just one victory and three defeats from their first four games, the Yellow Submarine occupied 15th position in the league going into the international break.
Marca recently reported that Raul and his entourage informed Real Madrid’s management that the managerial role at Villarreal interests him. And the Laliga giants chiefs are pleased for him to depart.
Raul is a club legend at Real Madrid after amassing 228 goals in 550 games for los Blancos.

A good run at Villarreal might get the 46-year-old manager closer to his goal of managing Madrid’s first team in the future. The three-time UEFA Champions League winner has made no secret of his desire to achieve this goal.
Raul is believed to be friends with Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti. Ancelotti is currently link to the position of head coach of Brazil’s national team.
