Lionel Messi Apologized For Scoring A Goal In A Final; This Sums Up His Personality

Lionel Messi famously apologized for scoring in a final, demonstrating how humble he is despite his success.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner excitedly celebrated both goals in the World Cup final against France at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar.

He’s also been quite enthusiastic after scoring in the Champions League final, which he has won four times in his career.

Messi, on the other hand, delivered a rather quiet celebration in 2015. He was a standout for Luis Enrique’s Barcelona in their 3-0 FIFA Club World Cup final victory.

It was against River Plate from Argentina in Yokohama, and for earning the Man of the Match award, Messi was given a Toyota Prius.

Luis Suarez scored a second-half brace after the Barcelona veteran opened the scoring in the 36th minute.

But when Messi found the net, he refused to celebrate out of respect for the River fans who had made the journey.

16,000 fans of them were in attendance and Messi felt bad for “ruining” their experience.

“I know how much effort all those fans made in making that trip and how excited they were,” he said in a post-match interview with FIFA, via Sport.

“And there was me, the Argentinian, scoring the first goal and ruining it all for them.

“I don’t know if I was actually saying sorry, but it was a type of apology.”

Messi is a Newell’s Old Boys supporter and spent his early days playing for his hometown club, so one would think he would have relished scoring even more.

According to Miguel Martnez, a former Rosario Football Association publicity officer, Messi scored 234 goals in 176 games between the ages of six and twelve.
