Sporting Manager Addresses Links To Man United Job

Sporting Lisbon manager, Ruben Amorim has reportedly addressed reports linking him to replace under-fire manager, Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

Under ten Hag, United have had a terrible start to the season, losing eight of their first 15 games. This week, they have suffered back-to-back 3-0 losses at home against Manchester City and Newcastle.

The Dutchman is under pressure to make a swift turnaround. And if the club’s current predicament persists, it has been suggested that Amorim and Zinedine Zidane have been considered as possible options for the 53-year-old.

After making an impression in the Portuguese club’s dugout, Amorim has been linked to a move to the Premier League during the previous 18 months.

What Did Amorim Say About Man United Managerial Link?

According to The Mail, when the 38-year-old was questioned about the likelihood of him joining Old Trafford, he remained cautious to comment too much.

‘This year I’m not going to go back to the same conversation as last year,’ he said in response to a question on if he would be lured to join United. This was after Sporting’s 4-2 victory against Farense in the Portuguese Cup on Thursday.

‘I’m not going to make any kind of comment on these situations. We don’t know the future, it depends on the results.’

Amorim continued by implying that he has a clear vision of how he wants events to unfold in the upcoming months. But he remained secretive until admitting that he has not yet had a conversation with United.

‘Regarding the future, I have an idea for the end of the season but I won’t say it now. But the results and the context take us to something different,’ he added.

‘I don’t want to be commenting on these things. I have not been contacted by Manchester United.’

According to reports, Amorim’s Sporting contract contains a release clause of about €10 million (£8.7 million).

Since taking over at Sporting in March 2020, Amorim has not held a managerial position outside of Portugal.

In his debut season in 2020–21, Amorim—who is still only 38 years old—led the Leões to their first league title in 19 years. During his tenure at the club, he also won the Portuguese Super Cup twice and the Portuguese League Cup twice.
