After Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal fell 1-0 to Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday, Ian Wright believes the Gunners are’missing’ Granit Xhaka.
While the cry to allow Newcastle’s goal continues to roar on, it is important to note that the team as a whole did not perform effectively.
Arsenal were without a number of players over the weekend, including captain Martin Odegaard and Thomas Partey, with Ian Wright calling the latter’s injury as a’massive blow’ to Premier League Productions (06/11/23 @ 2:25 pm).
But it was Granit Xhaka’s name that Ian Wright mentioned after his £22 million summer transfer to Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen (Football London).
Not Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich are at the top of the Bundesliga table, but Bayer Leverkusen, who have won nine of their ten matches and are unbeaten in the Europa League.

Granit Xhaka has been at the heart of it all, but it seems as though Ian Wright would prefer him to still be in north London and playing for Mikel Arteta.
Arsenal ‘missing’ Granit Xhaka
“I think Thomas Partey’s injury has been a massive blow to us,” said Wright.
“Zinchenko’s form and dropping off. Missing Xhaka, the way Xhaka was and how he helped him. I think we are missing that dynamic in the game.”
Granit Xhaka’s professional career
For a very long time. Xhaka was a divisive character at Arsenal. He was a hard-nosed player. He gave it his all. Many people assumed he played without a brain.
The athlete thought he was being committed, while others saw it as risky.
In any case, Arteta altered a player who was undoubtedly Arsenal’s best player over the last two years of his stint at the club as soon as he walked through the doors, during a very difficult time for Xhaka.
And that form has now transferred to Bayer Leverkusen, who are currently the best team in Europe given their form and the kind of game they are playing under Alonso.
