Ramsdale ‘Concentration’ Comments Resurface Amid Goalkeeping Position Battle With Raya

A jaw-dropping footage of Aaron Ramsdale has re-emerged and could provide a clue as to why Mikel Arteta benched him in favor of David Raya.

Following Raya’s arrival, Ramsdale had a mixed start to the 2023–24 season between the sticks. He has been left out of the lineup after the September international break. Since then, the 25-year-old has only started two Carabao Cup games.

For the past two months, Ramsdale has been on the bench, watching Raya struggle to meet the Gunners’ increased expectations. The Spain international has been caught multiple times, but Arteta has persisted in supporting his choice.

Ramsdale’s 2022–2023 season was marked by a handful of outstanding saves that were frequently eclipsed by an error. The England international performed brilliantly away to Liverpool and Tottenham. But Arteta has stressed the value of having two elite options at every position, which he now feels he has.

According to Football London, while it is possible that Ramsdale’s own remarks regarding his actions during games had some bearings, Arteta probably found it difficult to remove Ramsdale from the starting lineup. During the summer, he made the following statement on the Premier League YouTube channel.

“If you ask me to concentrate on a game of football for 90 minutes, I’m finished. I can’t do it.

“So that’s why I got involved with the fans and I’ll sing along with the songs. Someone’s giving me abuse, I’ll turn around and I’ll give them a bit back.

I’ve had my two/three minutes of sort of madness in my head, straight back to the football. I’ve got 10/15 minutes of pure concentration again. Next thing you know half time is around.”
