Nothing that Pep Guardiola has observed in Tottenham’s recent losses indicates that Manchester City’s test this week will be simpler.
Under new manager Ange Postecoglou, who took home the league’s Manager of the Month award for the first three months of the season, Spurs were the early leaders in the Premier League, playing a daring brand of football. Their winning streak was cruelly ended by three straight league losses, so they will be under pressure to pick up their play when they visit the Etihad.
According to Manchester Evening News, Guardiola first faced Postecoglou in a friendly in 2019, during the manager’s tenure at Japanese team Yokohama F Marinos. Since then, Guardiola has kept a close eye on the player’s career. The City manager has been observing the recent Spurs losses in an attempt to spot opportunities for his team to take advantage of, but despite the turnaround in results, he hasn’t noticed a shift in performance.
“I know they lost the last games but I see a lot of similarities when they were winning games. There were two red cards against Chelsea and bad moments but the dynamics they have are always positive,” said Guardiola.
“If you ask me if they drop in the games they lost I would say no. It is quite similar to when they were winning but when [James] Maddison doesn’t play it’s different. When [Cristian] Romero and his partner don’t play, it’s different.

“The job depends on players but from what I saw they didn’t drop anything. They have important absences but I saw the first 15-20 minutes against Aston Villa where they created a lot of chances with their approach”
