Newcastle United manager, Eddie Howe has reflected on his side’s performance following their 4-2 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on New Year’s Day.
The Magpies were pelted with an incredible 34 shots as their opponents inflicted their third straight Premier League loss thanks to goals from Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo in the second half and a brace from Mohamed Salah.
Salah broke the deadlock in the 49th minute after Martin Dubravka saved his first-half penalty. However, Alexander Isak equalized against the run of play.
But the joy was temporary as Jones and substitute Gakpo boosted the Reds’ advantage to 3-1.
Sven Botman’s header gave United hope for an unexpected comeback. But Salah’s second penalty of the game sealed the victory.
According to the Newcastle World, after the final whistle was blown, Howe questioned referee Anthony Taylor’s choice to award the spot-kick in remarks to the media following the game. Citing what appeared to be minimal contact between Martin Dubravka and Diogo Jota.
What Did Howe Say About The Performance Of Liverpool?
Howe said: “I think there are two ways to look at it.
“The challenge on [Sean] Longstaff was a penalty and that changes the game massively. And then Liverpool go up the other end and for me that wasn’t a penalty. That’s a very tough moment for us.”
The Toon gaffer did, however, continue to compliment Liverpool, whose seven XG is the highest in a Premier League game ever.
“It was a really good performance from Liverpool,” said Howe. “They made it very difficult for us and we did very well to come in at half-time at 0-0.
“We were in the game right until the end. The character and commitment was of the highest level. Maybe not our best performance but a lot of effort given.
“Take away the penalty moments the goals we conceded we’re disappointed with. We know we can do better in those moments.”
On Saturday, Newcastle’s FA Cup third-round clash with Tyne-Wear rivals Sunderland will take place at the Stadium of Light.
