Thanks To His Football-Crazy Father, Luke Humphries’ Name Has Hidden Leeds United Meaning

Luke Humphries is the man of the moment in darts and is also a huge Leeds United fan – and even has a brilliant reason why he is named after the Elland Road club.

Darts fly! Luke Humphries is a lifelong Leeds United supporter, thanks to his football-mad father.

The 28-year-old, nicknamed ‘Cool Hand,’ won the Paddy Power PDC World Darts Championship on Wednesday night after coming from behind to defeat teenage phenom Luke Littler 7-4.

While he’s been busy shooting arrows at Alexandra Palace, he’ll also be keeping an eye on Leeds’ results in the Championship as they attempt to return to the Premier League. Despite being from Berkshire, Humphries supports Leeds United because of his father and his Spurs-crazy grandfather on Super star.

During a visit to Elland Road, he disclosed, “It was the 1972 FA Cup final.” My grandfather favored Tottenham and forced my father and uncle to pick between Leeds and Arsenal. My uncle was older, so he got first pick and chose Arsenal, while my father chose Leeds, and here I am.”

Humphries was called after his father’s love for Leeds United, with his first name writing out ‘(L)eeds (U)nited, (K)ings of (E)urope’.

“I was going to be called Liam,” he shared. “Then he saw someone had named their son the same, ‘Leeds United Kings of Europe’. What better way to be associated with your football club than to be named after them. It’d be nice if we could both win a Premier League title one day, that would be great.”

The ‘Kings of Europe’ nickname is a bit cheeky since Leeds have never won the European Cup or Champions League. But they did bag the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (the precursor to the UEFA Cup) in 1968 and 1971.

Despite missing out on Premier League selection last year, Humphries will join the annual darting roadshow in 2024, and he’s sure to get loads of support at the Leeds night on May 9. The full eight-player line-up is confirmed at 4pm on Thursday, January 4.
