Pundit Delivers Harsh Werner Judgement Ahead Of Tottenham Move

Former Premier League manager, Graeme Souness has ripped into Timo Werner ahead of his Tottenham Hotspur switch claiming the German is a “stocking filler”.

The ex-Chelsea attacker is close to joining the North London club on a six-month loan from RB Leipzig. In the summer, they’ll have the opportunity to sign him on a permanent basis.

With this move, Werner makes his Premier League comeback after a patchy spell in the capital with Chelsea. Former Liverpool star, Souness is not overly impressed with the signing and thinks the striker is only Ange Postecoglou’s stop-gap signing.

What Did Souness Say About Werner’s Move To Tottenham?

“He needs five opportunities to score a goal, and he had one good season prior to coming here,” Souness said on talkSPORT as reported by The Mirror.

“He found it difficult to get goals and I would say nothing’s changed, he’s gone back to Leipzig and this season played eight [Bundesliga] games and scored two goals.

“He’s a stocking filler, he’s another body. I don’t think he’ll do very well, but having said that, he’s the kind of player that will get three or four chances every game because he’s rapid and gets himself in the right place.

“He’s a player who one year could get 30 goals, and the next five or six, so he could have the most incredible purple patch and then Spurs will have to sign him.

“[Liverpool forward Darwin] Nunez falls into that category where he needs too many chances to score a goal, but that may change as he’s a young man. Werner, I don’t see that changing, but he could have a purple patch.”

Werner won the Champions League with Chelsea during his previous stint in the Premier League. He scored 23 goals in 89 games. In the summer of 2022, the 27-year-old made his way back to RB Leipzig, where he scored 16 goals in his first season back to Germany.
