After Newcastle United defeated Aston Villa 3-1 at Villa Park, Leon Bailey of Aston Villa called them “a brilliant team”.
After four straight losses, the Magpies won their second Premier League away game of 2023–24. They also dealt Aston Villa their first home loss in almost a year, which made a damage in their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.

After coming off the bench, Bailey inspired an instant reaction by setting up a goal for Ollie Watkins. Watkins’ subsequent goal was disallowed for offside, giving Bailey and his colleagues ample opportunity to mount a comeback, but Eddie Howe’s squad held on.
Bailey remarked, “I couldn’t tell exactly why it was missing tonight.” Newcastle is an excellent team. They have an excellent organization and play excellent football. They forced us to put in a lot of work right away and were relentless.
We had a lot of pressure to rally after scoring two goals early. They deserved to lead by two goals since they played better than we did. However, with Aston Villa playing in the second half, there were hopes of getting an early goal and they got it.”
