Borussia Dortmund announced on Friday that Marco Reus will depart at the end of the current campaign, capping a 12-year tenure with the team.
The decision to not renew the player’s contract was made amicably by both sides.
After returning to the team from Borussia Mochengladbach in 2012, the 34-year-old Dortmund youth product has made 424 appearances to date, tallying 168 goals and dishing out 128 assists.
ESPN reports that Reus released a statement saying, “I’m immensely grateful for and proud of this special time at my club Borussia Dortmund.”
“I have spent more than half of my life at this club and enjoyed every day, even though there have been difficult moments too.”
At Dortmund, Reus has been a talisman, winning the DFB-Pokal in 2016–17 and 2020–21 as well as qualifying for the Champions League final in 2013 under Jürgen Klopp.

“I already know now that I will find it difficult to say goodbye at the end of the season,” Reus stated. “However, I’m glad that everything is clear now and that we can concentrate entirely on the crucial remaining games.
“We all want to work together to accomplish a major goal that is in our sights. We will require each and every one of our incredible fans to do this, and I want to sincerely thank them for their unwavering support throughout the years.”
On Saturday, Dortmund takes on Augsburg in the Bundesliga.
