‘Embarrassing And Out Of Order’-Cristiano Ronaldo Under Criticism After Tearful Euro Breakdown

Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo has come under fire for crying after missing a penalty in the Euro 2024 last-16 encounter against Slovenia.

Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa saved three penalties in the shootout against Slovenia after Ronaldo missed his spot shot in extra time, advancing his team to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 after a dramatic night in Frankfurt.

Slovenia, the lowest-ranked team remaining in the competition, battled through a goalless 90 minutes and came near through Benjamin Sesko.

Ronaldo, who had numerous free-kicks go wide, then took a penalty in the opening period of extra time, but goalkeeper Jan Oblak saved it brilliantly at full stretch.

Sesko then squandered a chance to win it for Slovenia when experienced defender Pepe slipped, allowing him to gallop clear, only for Costa to make a great save.

Ronaldo’s tears turned to smiles after the penalty shootout, but Didi Hamann, a former Liverpool and Germany player, accused the Portugal legend of disappointing his squad with his emotional outburst.

“All he thinks about is himself,” Hamann told RTÉ Sports. “I believe he displayed his true colors again.

“After missing the penalty, he starts crying on the field, at halftime, and in extra time. And I’m thinking, ‘It’s not all about you.

“There is a squad of 26 players, 20 staff members, and 30 or 40,000 fans in there; it is not about you.

“You try to be mutual, but I was cheering Slovenia on because I thought the reaction was embarrassing, I thought it was out of order.
