Chelsea have castigated all discriminatory’ behaviour and have launched an internal disciplinary process over Argentina’s derogatory remarks about French players.
Following the Albiceleste’s Copa América victory over Colombia on Sunday, Chelsea star Enzo Fernández and his Argentina colleagues made “racist and discriminatory remarks” about the French team. The French Football Federation (FFF) said on Tuesday that it would submit a legal complaint over these remarks.
“Chelsea Football Club finds all forms of discriminatory behaviour completely unacceptable,” a club statement said on Wednesday as reported by ESPN.
“We are proud to be a diverse, inclusive club where people from all cultures, communities and identities feel welcome.”
Fernandez shared a video on Instagram after Argentina’s 1-0 victory against Colombia in the final match. And it received a lot of attention on X (formerly called Twitter). The players from Argentina were seen in the video yelling derogatory slogans that specifically targeted the African players from France.
Before France and Argentina faced off in the 2022 World Cup final, which Argentina won, some Argentine supporters began chanting the same words.
France defender, Wesley Fofana expressed his displeasure with his Chelsea teammate by reposting the video and labeling the chant as “uninhibited racism.”

Following Fofana, Chelsea and France forward, Christopher Nkunku said on X, “God bless them,” in reference to the disparaging remarks made by the Argentine team.
Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, declared in May that racism would not be tolerated in football or any of its 211 member federations. He also promised to reestablish a task force to keep an eye on such events.
