Liverpool midfielder, Alexis Mac Allister has been the latest individual to speak out concerning Enzo Fernandez and Argentina players’ discriminatory chants of French players following their 2024 Copa America victory.
After posting a video of himself and a few of his Argentina teammates celebrating their victory over Colombia last weekend in the US, Fernandez’s club Chelsea have imposed disciplinary action on him. In the video, the players can be heard singing a song that purportedly makes racist remarks about French players.
Wesley Fofana, Fernandez’s Chelsea teammate, has been among many who have widely denounced it. The French Football Federation has also filed an official complaint with FIFA.
According to Liverpool Echo, Mac Allister is adamant that his fellow midfielder is not a racist. Though he acknowledges that his nation isn’t used to handling such claims. The 24-year-old is thought not to have been among the Argentina players on the coach with Fernandez.
“You have to be careful with what you say or do, especially in Europe where they are much more sensitive than here,” Mac Allister said to Argentina news outlet Urbana Play FM.
“The reality is that we are not a racist country, we are not used to talking about racism so much. Yes, it’s a very important topic, obviously.
