Mikel Merino’s Stance On Barcelona Transfer As Arsenal Concerns Emerge

Mikel Merino may yet be granted the chance to join Barcelona this summer, now that the Spanish club has failed to secure other targets.

The Spain midfielder is in high demand this summer following his great Euro 2024 campaign, with Arsenal and other European clubs interested in signing the 28-year-old.

Arsenal are set to increase their interest in the playmaker after signing Italy defender Riccardo Calafioro, and Merino is believed to be Mikel Arteta’s top target. He would, however, be open to an offer from Barcelona.

According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Merino has his’sights set’ on a proposal from Barcelona, who may now be able to solidify their interest after reportedly missing out on deals for Nico Williams and Oriel Romeu.

It’s worth noting that new manager Hansi Flick and the club’s sporting director, Deco, are both major fans of Merino, who appears receptive to the move.

Merino, who, according to the source, has already turned down offers from Atletico Madrid this summer, is regarded as an excellent addition for Arsenal as they seek to improve a side that came agonisingly close to defeating Manchester City in last year’s title race.

However, football.london reported over the weekend that some members of Arsenal’s hierarchy are secretly concerned about Merino’s age.

It’s worth noting that new manager Hansi Flick and the club’s sporting director, Deco, are both big fans of Merino, who appears to be open to the move.

Merino, who, according to the source, has already turned down bids from Atletico Madrid this summer, is considered as an excellent addition to Arsenal’s squad as they strive to enhance a team that came agonisingly close to upsetting Manchester City in the title fight last season.
