Liverpool legend, Jamie Carragher is reportedly not expecting the club to mount a Premier League title challenge this season despite coming agonizingly close last campaign.
The Reds finished the previous season with just one trophy, though they were in the running for four in the second half of last term. They were first in the league table at the beginning of April, but their chances of winning the title were dashed by costly defeats to Everton and Crystal Palace.
Arne Slot has replaced Jurgen Klopp, whose resignation was announced well in advance of the season’s conclusion. Though the Dutchman is yet to make his first summer signing, the new manager has managed some outstanding preseason performances.
But perhaps asking for a title bid is asking for too much. At least in the opinion of Carragher, who has urged realism following the team’s third-place finish in the previous campaign.
“I was really surprised Liverpool came so close last season, if I’m being honest,” Carragher told FourFourTwo.
“With the new manager coming in, finding his feet in the Premier League, most Liverpool fans would expect top four this season. I don’t think anyone will be expecting a title.
“If you could have a title challenge like last season, and maybe a new manager comes in and adds something to what Jurgen Klopp had.

“But having a new manager in the Premier League is not easy and I think Liverpool slightly overperformed last season in terms of being in the title race for so long.
“Another season like Liverpool had last season would be a great start for Arne Slot.”
