Liverpool have reportedly struck a £30 million transfer agreement with Brentford for Sepp van den Berg leaving Xabi Alonso plan in tatters.
The 22-year-old left Eredivisie club PEC Zwolle for Liverpool in a £4.4 million deal in 2019. But in his time with the Reds, he only made four first team appearances. Jurgen Klopp held him in high regard and even considered him to be Virgil van Dijk’s replacement at one point.
However, Arne Slot has decided to let the defender go. According to The Mirror, Brentford have already reached an agreement in principle to sign the Dutchman, which calls for the west London team to pay £25 million up front with a further £5 million in add ons for the central defender.
Several clubs showed interest in Van den Berg this summer, including Alonso’s team, Bayer Leverkusen.
The German champions, however, felt that Liverpool’s asking price for the center back was too high. Moreover, Leverkusen were only thinking about signing Van den Berg in the event that another defender left the team before the transfer deadline.
According to Sky Sports, another German outfit, Stuttgart, were also pursuing a transfer for Van den Berg. They refer to the Dutch defender as their “plan A.” However, the Bundesliga side were likewise unable to match the deal.

Brentford now have a clear path to complete the transfer as Stuttgart and Leverkusen are unable to provide the necessary funds. The club are still awaiting the player’s decision.
Following in the footsteps of 21-year-old attacking midfielder Fabio Carvalho, Van den Berg would be the second player from Liverpool to move to Brentford this summer if he decides to sign with the Bees.
