Italian Stefano Pioli was named head coach of Saudi Al Nassr on Wednesday, taking over from Luis Castro, who left the team following a lackluster season opener.

The 58-year-old Pioli began his management career in 1999 in his first position outside of his own country.

He managed AC Milan from October 2019 until May 2024, during which time he presided over the team’s 2022 Serie A championship campaign.

Before spending almost five years as the Rossoneri’s coach, Pioli was the head coach of Fiorentina, Inter Milan, Lazio, and Bologna, among other Italian teams.

His two greatest sporting accomplishments were the 1985 European Cup and the 1986 Serie A title with Juventus.

One of Pioli’s greatest obstacles to date is that, since Ronaldo’s historic arrival in early 2023, three coaches have left Al-Nassr, including his Portuguese predecessor.

In the last Saudi Pro League season, the team finished in second place, reports Inside World Football

Pioli may begin his term when Al-Nassr travels to play Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq on Friday.

Al Nassr has won in several competitions, winning 28 recognized championships.

They have won nine Saudi Pro League titles, three Crown Prince Cups, three Saudi Federation Cups, six King Cups, and two Super Cups in domestic tournaments.
