Barcelona Registered Interest In 23-Year-Old Before Liverpool Agreement

Barcelona reportedly held an interest in Valencia goalkeeper, Giorgi Mamardashvili before agreeing to a move to Liverpool.

The severe knee injury suffered by Marc-Andre ter Stegen has prompted a discussion at Barcelona about the future of their goalkeeping department.

The plan is for the team to immediately bring in a temporary fix, possibly signing players like Wojciech Szczesny or Keylor Navas.

But with Ter Stegen’s injury being so serious and his 33rd birthday coming up in a few months, there will likely be talk about a long-term successor for the German.

According to Mundo Deportivo as reported by Barca Universal, the Catalan club are fond of Mamardashvili.

Asides their love for the 23-year-old, Barca have positive things to say about the international goalkeeper from Georgia.

Indeed, the report goes on to say that if it weren’t for the club’s financial predicament and their complete faith in Ter Stegen, the Blaugrana might have thought about pursuing Mamardashvili this past summer.

However, since Liverpool acquired the 23-year-old goalie, a move for Mamardashvili in the near future is no longer feasible.

The Reds reached an agreement with Valencia over a deal around €30 million plus additional €5 million in add-ons for the Georgian international this past summer, and permitted him to continue with the La Liga club on loan for this season.

Mamardashvili will be joining Liverpool in the upcoming season. Therefore Barcelona will not be able to sign him anytime soon since they decided not to pursue him.
