Player Appears To Hit Out At Chelsea And Manchester United – Put Him In A Box That Didn’t Fit

Romelu Lukaku,  Napoli striker, has responded to criticism from England following disastrous spells at Chelsea and Manchester United, claiming that people never understood the type of player he is.

Lukaku recently spoke with the Friends of Sport podcast in Belgium on his time in England with Chelsea, Everton, and Manchester United.

The 31-year-old is currently at Napoli after completing a €30 million transfer to the Italian club this summer to reconnect with Antonio Conte.

He has formerly played for Anderlecht, Chelsea, West Bromwich Albion, Everton, Manchester United, and Inter Milan.

His appearances in England have had mixed outcomes, with the striker definitely thriving at Everton, where he scored 87 goals in 166 games and is the club’s greatest goal scorer in the Premier League era, but suffering at Manchester United and Chelsea.
He scored 42 goals and 12 assists in 96 games for United but only 15 goals and two assists in 59 games for Chelsea throughout two periods.

He is now glad to be back in Italy and working under Conte, but when asked about his troubles in England, he argued that they were merely due to his miscasting.

“In England they wanted to put me in a box,” he recalls.

“They see someone built like me and think of new Drogba.

I am not like that. Didier was more effective with his back to the goal, since he could keep the ball no matter where it was played. “That was not my style.”
