Two Italian sports newspapers‘ front pages termed it a’slap in the face’ to Real Madrid when Manchester City midfielder Rodri won the Ballon d’Or on Monday night, citing two players who may have deserved the award more.
Rodri received the Ballon d’Or at the final presentation in Paris on Monday evening, generating quite a shock because Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. had been considered as the frontrunner to win the award for several weeks.
As a result, Real Madrid decided to skip the event, and Carlo Ancelotti, who won Coach of the Year, along with club President Florentino Perez and players like as Jude Bellingham and Dani Carvajal, stayed at home instead.

After the decision to award Rodri the Ballon d’Or, both La Gazzetta dello Sport and Tuttosport described it as a’slap in the face’ for Real Madrid.
Tuttosport went even farther, naming two players who they believed deserved the award more.
Vinicius Jr. was the obvious choice, having led Real Madrid to their 15th Champions League triumph at the beginning of June.
Tuttosport felt that Dani Carvajal, who was not only a member of Madrid’s Champions League-winning side but also played an important role in Spain’s success at EURO 2024 during the summer, was an even more deserving choice than Vinicius.
