Manchester City and Liverpool decided not to pursue Ruben Amorim because they believed that his formation would not work with their system.
Manchester United’s top target to succeed Erik ten Hag is the manager of Sporting Lisbon.

During his tenure in Portugal, where he has won several league titles and cups, Amorim’s reputation has only grown.
When deciding who should succeed Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool had previously contemplated pursuing Amorim.
Amorim has also been connected to people from Manchester’s blue side, and since City added Hugo Viana to their ranks, those connections have only grown.
Liverpool and City both believed that the 39-year-old was too dedicated to his 3-4-3 style and that it would not work at their club. The Merseyside team believed that hiring Amorim would cause too much disruption.
With Pep Guardiola’s contract expiring, City is still uncertain about their future plans, reports Mirror.
Although Amorim has been mentioned, the club’s officials prefer to stick with four at the back and will look at other options when the time comes.
However, United is not deterred by Amorim’s methods of operation and is still negotiating with Sporting over his release clause and the start date at Old Trafford.
Gary Neville has previously hinted that switching to a back three would help the Red Devils.
