A former Valencia player has tragically been killed in the disastrous floods in Spain.
The tragedy shook the nation as 158 people have died thus far, and many worry that the death toll will climb in the days ahead. The army has been called in to offer assistance.
In the most affected area of Valencia in eastern Spain, emergency personnel are searching homes one by one, and authorities are concerned that the death toll may increase.
It comes after more than a year’s worth of rain fell in only eight hours earlier this week, sweeping away buildings and bridges and engulfing communities in a muddy torrent with overturned cars strewn across the streets.
According to the Daily Mail, Jose Castillejo, a 28-year-old football player who has played for several clubs in his own country, including the La Liga giants, was one of the victims thus far.
“We regret the death of Jose Castillejo, a victim of the Dana disasters,” Valencia said in a statement.
“He was part of the club’s Academy until his youth stage and has played for several teams in the Valencian Community. RIP.”
Eldense, meanwhile, who Castillejo played for between January and August 2016, added: “We deeply regret Jose Castillejo’s passing at 28, a former blue-and-red player in the 2015/2016 season.
