Arsenal Eyeing 43 Year Old Sporting Director Alongside Olabe And Rolfes To Replace Edu

Arsenal are considering AS Monaco CEO Thiago Scuro as a possible replacement for departed sporting director Edu Gaspar, according to Sky Sports journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

Edu stated earlier this month that he will be departing Arsenal after five years, having overseen the club’s rise from mid-table mediocrity to perennial title contenders. David Ornstein announced that the 46-year-old has been placed on gardening leave while serving his six-month notice, with Jason Ayto taking interim command while the club searches for a successor.

The North London outfit appears to be coming closer to discovering the heir to Edu’s throne, with Scuro seen as a genuine contender. Di Marzio revealed that the Monaco executive is being seriously considered for the post of sporting director at the Emirates, as Arsenal looks to fill a vacancy fast.

Edu developed a tight relationship with Mikel Arteta and has been credited with using his contacts and connections to bring a number of the Spanish tactician’s targets to the Emirates, notably Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard. As a result, his departure has been deemed important at Arsenal, with Mark Goldbridge describing the announcement as’massive’.

There is a sense that Edu’s replacement must be found quickly in order to keep the changing of the guard from disturbing operations at London Colney and, eventually, from jeopardizing the Gunners season. According to Di Marzio, the Premier League team is following Scuro’s profile and may approach him about a role as sporting director.

‘Tough negotiator’ Scuro is well-regarded in football administration, with Di Marzio noting he ‘appreciates young players and sells effectively’. Arriving at Monaco in the summer of 2023, replacing Newcastle-bound Paul Mitchell, the Brazilian took over an elderly squad that had finished sixth in Ligue 1.

Rebuilding this aging squad, he paid for the acquisitions of Folarin Balogun, Denis Zakaria, and Thilo Kehrer by selling Axel Disasi to Chelsea for a record £38.8 million. As a result of this efficient squad-building, the team qualified for the Champions League, finishing second behind Paris Saint-Germain and currently third in the competition after four games.

These outstanding accomplishments will undoubtedly delight Arsenal fans, as the Gunners consider providing Scuro a role, while they are also rumored to be interested in Real Sociedad’s Roberto Olabe.
