Arne Slot described Liverpool’s 6-3 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday as “an incredible display,” but believed his team was punished for taking their foot off the throttle after an hour to allow their opponents back into the game.
The Reds climbed four points ahead of Chelsea in second place thanks to goals from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah, as well as Alexis MacAllister and Dominik Szoboszlai, while James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, and Dominic Solanke scored for the hosts.
Liverpool led 3-1 at halftime before scoring twice more through Salah after the restart, and Slot was pleased with what he witnessed up to that point but cautioned about how the latter third of the match played out.
“Yeah, until 60-65 minutes I really really really enjoyed what I saw,” Slot told me. “Of course, we were caught once bringing the ball out from the back, which resulted in a goal for Tottenham.
“I believe that if we had gone into the dressing room with a 2-1 lead, it would not have done credit to all of our chances. as’s why I was so pleased as we scored 3-1, 4-1, and 5-1, an incredible performance.
“But then I noticed that no matter how talented a player is, if they believe they don’t have to run anymore, particularly in this league, especially against Tottenham, who are so fantastic with the ball, they instantly start to create, which is exactly what they did. To be truthful, I was pleased when our sixth goal went in after they had scored two.
