Chelsea striker Diego Costa wants to return to Atletico Madrid this summer, according to the club’s president Enrique Cerezo.
The 27-year-old joined Chelsea from Atletico in 2014 just after helping them to the Champions League final and the La Liga crown, following a stunning season of change under manager Diego Simeone.
The Argentine tactician is still in charge in the Spanish capital and it looks like he could be reunited with his former striker Costa, who has scored 32 goals in 54 Premier League appearances for the Blues.
“We are there, he wants to come. But that is already complicated,” Cerezo said to Antena 3 Sports, as reported by the Metro.
As a further hint that Simeone could be looking at bringing his former striker back to the club, Cerezo also revealed that the two-time Champions League finalist was hoping to sign a goal-scoring striker this summer to take his side to new heights.
He added: “Simeone wants new players and one of those is a striker. We desire a striker with goals, a good salary, and the ability to help us win many trophies.”
Costa scored 27 goals in 35 La Liga appearances – 36 in 52 in all competitions – for Atletico in his final season at the club, as he truly stamped his mark on European football.
He scored 20 goals in just 26 appearances in his debut campaign to help the Blues win the title, but his second season has not quite been as good, as he scored just 12 top flight goals.
