Luis Enrique admits Liverpool’s pace was too much for Barcelona after 4-0 loss

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique admitted his side made too many mistakes against Liverpool.

Barça lost 4-0 against Liverpool at Wembley Stadium on Saturday evening. Luis Enrique believes one of the reasons of this poor result is that the Reds showed a better pace.

“The faster pace of their players showed,” the Barcelona boss said in the press conference after the game, via International Business Times.

“But in the middle of the season it’s unlikely that they’d have been able to get a result like that. It was a case of teams playing at very different rhythms. But it wasn’t our day either when it came to making mistakes. And you pay for such mistakes against teams like these.”

“The best news is that everyone came through it without getting injured” he added. “It all makes us keener than ever to get back to training and prepare for the next game. We have to work on the mistakes we made.”

Sadio Mane opened the scoresheet in the 15th minute of the game, while an own goal from Mascherano and a good finish from Origi early in the second half left Barcelona without options. Grujic scored from a header in the last minute of the game, making it 4-0.

Barça had beaten Leicester quite comfortably (4-2) in Sweden only three days before their defeat against Liverpool. While it is true that Liverpool start their league competition earlier than Barcelona, the Catalan side are facing Sevilla in the first leg of the Spanish Supercup next weekend, so they need to make sure their pace levels are improved by then.

Italian side Sampdoria, who are visiting the Camp Nou in a friendly game next Wednesday, will be a good test for Luis Enrique’s boys.

The “blaugrana” had never lost at Wembley before. They had won the two European cup finals they played there (1-0 against Sampdoria and 3-1 against Manchester United), they had beaten Arsenal for a 2-4 difference in a Champions League game in 1999 and they drew against Tottenham (1-1) and beat Al-Ahly (1-4) in the 2009 Wembley Cup.
