Sean Abbott could make his first Australia appearance for five years after being called up to replace the injured Andrew Tye for a T20 series with Sri Lanka. Abbott, 27, made one T20 and three one-day appearances for the Baggy Greens back in 2014 but had been in the international wilderness ever since. He has continued to play first-class cricket for New South Wales, while playing the 20-over game for the likes of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL and both the Sydney Sixers and Sidney Thunder in the Big Bash. Tye was due to feature in the three-match series but suffered an elbow injury throwing during a training session on Friday and is also unlikely to be fit for subsequent T20 series against Pakistan. Abbott’s inclusion has been met with few raised eyebrows in the Aussie media, with the likes of Nathan Coulter-Nile and Jhye Richardson thought to be more viable alternatives.
