Adams forced to call time on career

Two-time Olympic champion Nicola Adams has confirmed her retirement from boxing due to fears she could lose her sight. The 37-year-old had been hoping to fight in the coming months but she retires undefeated as a professional. Adams became a world champion in July when Arely Mucino was unable to defend her title, so the Brit was handed the belt as the mandatory challenger. She retained her WBO strap in September after a split-decision draw with Mexico’s Maria Salinas, but she now ends her career with a record of five wins and one draw. The Leeds fighter won gold for Britain at London 2012 and Rio 2016, and she says she can look back on her career with pride. Adams told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “I’ve been advised that any further impact to my eye would most likely lead to irreparable damage and permanent vision loss. “I’m immensely honoured to have represented our country – to win double Olympic gold medals, and then the WBO championship belt is a dream come true. But it’s not without taking its toll on my body.”
