Adrian is confident he will continue to feature for Liverpool this season and claims he and Alisson are “two number ones fighting for a position”. Reds boss Jurgen Klopp made the decision to hand the 32-year-old Spanish custodian a free transfer move to Anfield in the summer after his contract with West Ham expired.
It was expected the former Real Betis man, who made 150 appearances for the Hammers in six seasons with the east Londoners, would be mainly back-up on Merseyside.
Alisson started the season between the sticks, having been number one throughout 2018-19 as the Reds finished second in the league and won the Champions League.
The Brazilian received the Premier League Golden Glove for most clean sheets in the league with 21 and was named the men’s goalkeeper of the year at the Best FIFA Football Awards late last month.
However, a calf injury picked up in the first half of the season-opening 4-1 win against Norwich at Anfield opened the door for Adrian to get some game time.
He has made 11 appearances in all competitions, keeping clean sheets against in the away games against Burnley and Sheffield United.
Adrian also made a save in the penalty shoot-out that sealed the European Super Cup against Chelsea at the end of August.
However, Alisson’s return to fitness resulted in him being returned to the number one spot for Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Manchester United.
It has led to suggestions Adrian will now spend the remainder of the season watching from the sidelines as the club’s second-choice goalie.
But, when quizzed about his status in the goalkeeper ranks, Adrian said in an interview with newspaper Diario Sevilla: “When I signed, I knew who was here, that I had to face an important challenge. “In my contract it does not put me to be anyone’s second goalkeeper. I think that here we are two numbers one fighting for a position. I have made clear the level to which I am and then it will be the decision of the manager.”
