A misfiring Sergio Aguero embodied Manchester City’s failed bid to reach their first Champions League final, after an underwhelming semi-final second-leg performance at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
Although Manuel Pellegrini’s side knew they only needed a score draw to progress after a goalless first leg in Manchester, they appeared reluctant to attack in the closing stages of the game – and no-one less so than Aguero.
The Argentine had little impact in the match, and appeared a helpless spectator in a script that seemed to have already been written.
The striker has been somewhat passive as City have made their greatest strides on the continent.Aguero went into the fixture having failed to register a shot on target in his last four European outings, despite his tally of 28 goals in all competitions this season.
And his Champions League goal drought seemed set to continue, until the 88th minute. However, it was then when his only real impression on the game came in the closing minutes, with a speculative effort that he fired over the top of the net.
