Neymar Jr. suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his left knee during a FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Uruguay on Tuesday, according to Brazil’s Football Confederation (CBF).
According to ESPN, Neymar will have surgery, but the date has not yet been finalized. The CBF’s medical staff believes the 31-year-old will be able to recuperate in eight months and compete in the Copa América 2024, which will be held in the United States next summer.

Many people were perplexed by the graphic generated by the Brazilian’s new team, Al-Hilal. While the messaging is genuine and consistent with what fans expect from any club.
However, the pictures they employ, a photo of the injury and the player on a stretcher, cause misunderstanding. To make matters even stranger, the Saudi Arabian club added sponsors to the graphic.
Later that day, Neymar claimed on Instagram that he felt “strong,” but that he will need a lot of help to recover from another injury.
“It’s a very sad moment, the worst,” wrote Neymar. “I know I’m strong, but I’m going to need my family and friends even more this time.” Going through injury and surgery is not easy. Imagine going through it all again after a four-month healing period.”
